The Gator Swim Team is a regional parent-owned competitive swim team dedicated to teaching swimmers excellence in swimming and life through sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and integrity.
Gator Swim Team is a year-round USA Swimming club
which has been in existence since the late 1960s. GST is
based in the city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but is comprised
of swimmers
from many surrounding cities throughout Southeast Missouri and
Southern Illinois.
We use two pools throughout the calendar year. The
Cape Girardeau Central Municipal Pool is the Gator base of operations
for eleven out of the
twelve months during each year. Central Municipal Pool is a 50 meter
x 25 yard pool and is run by the City of Cape Girardeau. Central Municipal
Pool is enclosed
by a large bubble during the fall/winter months (Late September - Mid
May)
and then the bubble is taken down for the summer months. During the two
transition periods, GST uses the outdoor pool at Capaha Park in Cape
Girardeau.
Gator Swim Team is a member of the Ozark Local Swimming Committee (LSC).
Ozark Swimming is comprised of USA Swimming teams surrounding the St. Louis
area
as well as a few teams in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. Gator
Swim Team hosts two swim meets each year. These meets are open to all registered
USA swimming members. The Great Times Invitational takes place in early
February and is a timed finals competition held in short course yards.
GST also hosts
a long course meters meet at the beginning of the long course season. The
Gator
Long Course Kickoff/Pentathlon takes place in early May. The first half
of the meet is a Senior Meet, and then on Sunday of the meet weekend all
ages
are welcome for our Pentathlon with awards handed out to the overall winners
in each age group.
During the summer months, Gator Swim Team takes part in the summer league
provided by the Southeast Missouri Swim Conference. SMSC is associated
with the Amateur
Athletic Union (AAU) and is used by the Gator Swim Team as a developmental
program for our novice to intermediate level swimmers as well as an opportunity
to expose the sport of swimming to non year-round athletes.
